[aclug-L] fonts question

ok, i have a dir of fonts that i want to use in X (Type1), but i don't
have a fonts.dir or fonts.scale file in the dir... how do i make them?
i tried mkfontdir, but it creates a file w/ nothing other than the
number 0 at the top of the file...  HELP!
