OK, time to chime in:
Under T568B wiring conventions wires in a 10Base-T cable are labeled as follows:
1 Orange Tracer (White with orange bands)
2 Orange
3 Green Tracer
4 Blue
5 Blue Tracer
6 Green
7 Brown Tracer
8 Brown
This is how the RJ-45 should look when viewed from the top (the connector pins at the top, and the little plastic locking dealy away from you):
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8  If you have a straight cable, both ends will look like this
3 6 1 4 5 2 7 8  Will be the layout on one end of a crossover cable,  while the other uses the above pattern.
If it's a T568A wire, the only thing that will be different is the arrangements of pins 4 and 5, which we don't care about for 10Base-T anyway.

Hope this helps!
JA

i'm still looking at hardware problems.
i bought a crossover cable for the two machines instead of a hub.
i would probably get a hub when i need to start adding more machines.
i'm starting to wonder if this is really a cross over cable.
any one have a schematic so i could take a ohm meter and test it?
