i'm not sure if this means much but i swaped the two ethernet cards between
the two machines.
i'd noticed that the machine with the older smc was getting errors
with ifconfig but not the machine with the smc ultra.
anyway now neither machine is giveing me errors.
still not working but no errors with ifconfig.

i'm still looking at hardware problems.
i bought a crossover cable for the two machines instead of a hub.
i would probably get a hub when i need to start adding more machines.
i'm starting to wonder if this is really a cross over cable.
any one have a schematic so i could take a ohm meter and test it?

also the older smc autodetected as a wd8003 - wd8013 compatable.
is this good or bad?
