Hmmm... I'm not really familiar with using netcfg. Maybe someone else
would be better able to help here. Let me tell you how I set up my
network stuff. In my startup file (/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 on my Slackware
system) I have:

/sbin/ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1
/sbin/route add -net 127.0.0.0 netmask 255.0.0.0 lo

/sbin/ifconfig eth0 10.0.0.1
/sbin/route add -net 10.0.0.0

You don't have to have the above in a startup file. You can enter the
commands from a command line. Also note that you will want to use your
IPs and netmask that you have chosen in place of 10.0.0.x

The above works for me. I hope it helps.
