no messages, except it says it can't find the site...no DNS entry...just as if 
our
network went down (and it has, but when i've tested the new kernel, i'm 100%
positive it's up)

i went to kernel.org, and it had a place where it listed all the available 
upgrades
that kernel 2.1.x needed...  i installed most,  but half of them were either 
dead
links or wouldn't compile (net-tools being one that wouldn't compile)
