Linuxconf is indeed quite something. I had the pleasure of meeting
Mr. Gelinas at Linux Expo this spring. The system looks very nice. I
believe that RedHat has adopted a modified version for usage in 5.1,
although one will want to make sure all patches are applied, because
5.1 as distributed has some bugs.

The theory of the program is that it should be able to parse and
understand all your existing config files and let you manage them from
a convenient interface. This is accomplishes well, but there is one
thing that keeps me from using it: linuxconf takes control over the
system bootup (the /etc/init.d or /etc/rc.d scripts, depending on the
distro) from the normal scripts and does things itself. Fine (and
perhaps even idel) for most people, but not me.

This compares very favorably to previous solutions still. AIX has a
nasty config database. RedHat pre-5.1 had tools that "sorta" parsed
the existing files, sometimes. My advice: give it a try, but back up
your /etc directory first in case something goes awry.
