It's quite possible. You need a program called Samba. There is
online documentation. The setup is not terribly difficult. See
http://samba.anu.edu.au/ for details. Debian and RedHat both have
Samba packages.

Are you wanting to use your Linux box as a router, or do you have a
separate machine to use as a router and just want Linux to be an
ordinary client?

> 3.) yes!

For this, there are three methods:

 * smbfs lets you "mount" a Windows partition using Samba. This can
work in most cases, but the disadvantage is that the tendency of
Windows to crash can adversely effect the reliability of your
Linux box if they do. The advantage is that the files are
   completely (well almost) transparent.

 * smbclient gives you an FTP-like interface to a Windows box. This
is not a transparent interface, but it is still quite powerful.

 * smbtar (sometimes invoked as smbclient with special options) can
make tarfiles of files on remote boxes.

Just a side note on list etiquitte (not necessarily for anyone in
particular)... We like to keep as much discussion and followups to
questions on the list as possible. The reason is that this can help
other people that are reading the list and may be curious about the
same problems. Also, the responses are archived at
http://www.complete.org/mailinglists/archives/ (and will be searchable
soon) so we can reduce repeated occurances of the same questions on
the list, and people with the question can get results (by readin the
list) faster.

Thanks!
John
