ACLUG meeting: Tuesday, August 17
The planned topic for this meeting is Firewalling. For those of you
connected to the net, and especially those with Cable Modems, firewalling is
a means of protecting your system from unauthorized intruders. Jeff
Schaller will be the speaker.

Additionally, as time permits and if there is interest, we can also
lightly cover basic networking with SAMBA, IP Masquerading, and getting
your Linux box connected to the internet - both manually and with diald.

Also planned is a discussion on our meeting schedule. The room our meeting
is normally held in will be in use on Tuesday nights this semester. We
will need to either find an alternate meeting place or change the day of
the week for the second meeting of the month.

Finally, we will discuss Linux Demo Day, ask for suggestions,
and ask for volunteers to man the booth.

ACLUG Meeting: Monday, August 30
Due to the Labor Day holiday, this meeting has been moved forward one week
from the usual first Monday of the Month.

The topic of this meeting is Package tools and tar. Items to be discussed
are the Red Hat RPM package tools; the Debian dselect, apt, and dpkg
package tools; and the use of the 'tar' command to install software not
packaged for your distribution. The use of 'alien' to convert from one
package format to another will also be discussed.

Speakers for this meeting will be Tom Wallace and Tyler Doubravo.

Linux Demo Day: Saturday, September 18

Aclug is planning to participate in Linux Demo Day, where we will be
showing off the Linux operating system at a location TBA.
Volunteers should contact Clint Brubakken <cabrubak@xxxxxxx>.

        Project Summary

The purpose of the Linux Demo Day project is to
coordinate a concurrent worldwide demonstration of the Linux
Operating System to the casual computer user who may only have
heard of Linux but has never seen it and to those that are not
even aware that there is an alternative to running a Microsoft
operating system. What this translates to is LUGs throughout the
world setting up demonstrations of Linux at shopping malls,
schools, places of work, or wherever they feel would be
appropriate for their LUG. In addition to just demonstrating
Linux, the LUGs will also handout pamphlets that point visitors
        towards more information about Linux.

Here is the flyer which can be d/l from:

Other Business

 * Powered by Linux Squares status update
Still quite a few are available. $0.25 each.
 * Another Free Linux Install. Sometime early September (after people are back
from vacation)? or October (After the Linux Demo Day)

Pursuant to decisions made on 25 January 1999 and 9 February 1999, ACLUG
meetings have been scheduled as follows:

 * The first MONDAY of each month, at 7:00/7:30 PM; and

 * The third TUESDAY of each month, at 7:00/7:30 PM.

However, due to our normal location being unavailable on Tuesdays, we will
have to either change the day of the week or the location for the second
meeting of the month.

*** We are making an exception in September. Due to the Labor Day
*** holiday being the first Monday in September, this meeting will be
*** held one one week earlier on August 30th.

Meetings will be held in 260 Jabara Hall on the campus of Wichita State
University as always. Details on the event schedule and upcoming events can
be found at; maps can be found at

Please send suggestions for future topics to aclug@xxxxxxxxxxxx or mention
them at the meeting. Consider this the ACLUG suggestion box! :-)
We need meeting topics and volunteer speakers for the meetings.

One issue that has been somewhat troublesome is making presentations
interesting and useful for people with a wide range of Linux experiences.
We want our meetings to be useful for as many people as possible, so our
plan is this: For those of you that are starting out with Linux, or just
interested in what Linux can do, please feel free to join us at 7:00 PM on
each meeting date (currently the 1st Monday and 3rd Tuesday of each month).
We'll cover some basics about the evening's topic or Linux in general, or
have an informal Q&A time, depending on what the people present prefer. Also,
if you have any Linux questions (beginning or advanced), we'd like to get to
them between 7 and 7:30 so that the evening doesn't get too late for those
that have to work or go to class in the morning.

Our regular presentation will begin at 7:30 as it always has. Of course, if
you can make it at 7, you're encouraged to stay for the whole program. You
are welcome to arrive at either 7 or 7:30.

We will hold the this event in the Computer Science Department in
Jabara Hall on the main east campus of Wichita State University.
ACLUG has assembled some driving instructions on the Web at We will be located on the second floor of
Jabara Hall. We expect to be in room 260, but we'll be sure to post
signs if we need to relocate elsewhere. You'll be able to find a sign
on the wall in front of the 2nd floor elevator when you arrive.

Room 260 is almost directly in front of you as you exit the second-floor

About the Air Capital Linux Users Group

ACLUG was created in early 1998 as a group to help people discover
better ways to take advantage of modern computing through the use of
Linux. All ACLUG events are free; we have hosted two free Linux
installation events, during which Linux was installed on dozens of
computers for no charge. We would like to show the benefits of Unix
operating systems such as Linux to as many people as possible. ACLUG
members range from people just starting out with computers and Linux
to those that have written parts of the Linux system or are doing
computer research under the Linux platform.

About Linux
Linux is a modern, fully 32- and 64-bit operating system that runs on
a wide variety of hardware. Its most popular use is on PC-style
hardware, where Linux can completely replace Windows 95, Windows 98,
or NT. Linux sports astounding reliability, power, flexibility,
scalability, and networking. Linux is the most popular OS for
Internet servers, beating NT. Linux also works on less-expensive
computers than NT.

Linux is developed by a worldwide team of programmers: individuals,
companies, and universities using the Internet. All source code is
available, allowing peer review -- which is important for an operating

ACLUG would like to show you the benefits of Linux for home and
business use. Feel free to attend one of our meetings or ask
questions about Linux at aclug-L@xxxxxxxxxxxx. You may also examine the
archives of previous discussions on our discussion lists at or join the list;
instructions for doing so are at
Announcements for upcoming ACLUG meetings and events will always be sent
first to the aclug-announce mailing lists.
