Which version of offlineimap is this against? I have in
/usr/bin/offlineimap the following line:
init.startup('4.0.0')
That is from debian testing, and the patch you provided doesn't apply
cleanly at the second hunk.

Thanks for the patch. I just moved to gnus and offlineimap recently,
and don't know if some of my problems are me, gnus or offlineimap.
