Martijn> What I don't like [about daemontools]...
Oh, don't get me started. Using DJB tools requires putting aside much
of one's preferences and common practice. They don't matter a whit to
him; he just does it his own way.
Martijn> It's aversion for a FHS compliant directory structure...
Debian's package builds in /var/lib/svscan which is FHS compliant, but
also weird. You could of course build the package with whatever you'd
like, including /etc/services. As for other top-level directories,
that's totally up to you; I don't have them on my various boxes and
they don't get installed under Debian.
Martijn> Need to reboot to make it go on installation.
Nah; I definitely didn't reboot. Just hupping init or any other
documented mechanism to tell init to reread its config will do the
trick. man init.
Martijn> Generally, daemontools requires to do things so much
Martijn> different it is painful to support.
I'm with you there, which I why I went out of my way to mention that I
don't actually recommend it unless you're willing to put up with it.
Actually, maybe I'm not with you. It may be a moderate pain to set up
and learn, but it's very easy to support. It never crashes; it's
obvious how to modify the config once you have one service set up, and
there's only a handful of commands and options, so searching
documentation is very quick.
All that said, you've got to admin DJB is a brilliant implementor who
has written some simply rock-solid tools.
Suggestions for other daemon management tools proven to work well with
offlineimap would be appreciated and back on topic.
