While using the more utility is essential on a bare system, I would
highly recommend installing the Midnight Commander package on your
system.  It is very stable and is a nice character based file manager.
It has a self contained file viewer as well as an integrated, but
somewhat quirky, file editor.

Basically, it is the Swiss Army Chainsaw that is the first thing I put
on a new system.
