Although PHP is coming up with non-web, stand alone system, it's best if
it's left alone as dynamic html generation tool.

Honestly, I really don't know what's so great about PHP. After looking into
c, java, perl and bash for cgi type tool, I stumbled into PHP. PHP was just
easy, and made more sense to me, at that time, than Perl. So I just stuck
with PHP. (That was 3 1/2 years ago. I was very surprised to see how
quickly it gained its popularity...)

I don't believe in arguments like "language of my choice is better than
yours!" No matter what language you use, you can write secure or unsecure
code. Good or bad code. Manageable or spaghetti code. To me, what's most
important is how comfortable I feel with the environment. Even if Python
allows me to write clean code much easier than in Perl, it's just not good
enough reason to switch. Even if Java is the universal language, .... I
don't have use for it, and it just doesn't attract me.

With that said, I can't push anyone into using PHP, just because I use it,
or just because it's popular. (I just need to convince the people I work in
the same project with :) If you are comfortable with Perl, then stick with
it. But I just have to say.... PHP, to me, was very easy language to pick
up. (Actually, the knowledge I acquired while using PHP helped me writing
cgi scripts in Perl later.)
