try editing /etc/inittab and changing the line that ends in "initdefault"
to:

id:5:initdefault:

(this changes the runlevel from whatever it currently is, probably 3 from
your description, to runlevel 5)

p.s. oh yeah, you'll probably have to reboot after that :)
