a tgz is short hand for tar.gz

the 2.4 kernels don't seem to like certain hardrives.
i had to goto 2.2 also.  this came up recently on an
other list.  i've been told that it's a problem with
the drive and to replace it but it has been running
flawlessly for a year on a debian 2.2.
