1)  Use ifconfig for that one.

2)  Again, use ifconfig to do this too, unless you are on DHCP or PPP
network, then let pppd or dhcp client obtain IP automatically from ISP
or your gateway computer.

Hello,

I get a message that OEMComputer's internet address cannot be found and 
the suggestion that I add it to the /etc/hosts file.

My questions:

1) how do I find the ip address of my machine?

2) if I need to assign one, how woudl I do so and which number should I 
choose?

I am also very open to a helpful hint on where to find the documentation

or FAQ's or HOWTO's on this one.
