[linux-help] Installing alsa sound software

I downloaded the alsa driver, alsa libraries, and alsa utilities and started
to install the drivers. ./configure went part way through and ended with:
checking for directory with kernel source... /usr/src/linux
checking for kernel version... expr: syntax error
expr: syntax error
expr: syntax error
failed (probably missing /usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h)
I have a file /usr/src/linux-2.4.7-10/include/linux/version.h)
Apparently the configure script didn't like what it found in version.h. Or
is it trying to say it needs the kernel source to install this software?
Anyone familiar with this?
