Dennis,
I'm no expert on this. I assume your problem is with the X windows system
and that you have a good text screen (mode 3). I've had good luck by
starting X with "startx 2 > testfile". This sends the error messages as X
tries to start to the file testfile.
These errors are generated by X as it goes through XF86Config, looking for
legal combinations of horizontal and vertical frequencies that will work with
the numbers you put in XF86Config for your monitor. On one I did recently, I
got about 60 lines like this:
SVGA: Mode "800x600" needs vert refresh rate of 56.25 HZ. Deleted.
The modes run from 320x240 to 1920x1200. Five of them were 800X600, which
was what I wanted and what I knew my monitor would handle. But my monitor
spec only ran up to 55 Hz and X needed 56.25 So I told XF86Config that the
monitor went up to 57 and got a good picture. You may have to juggle both
horizontal and vertical frequencies.
good luck,
bruce
