Check out the application gphoto, it supports a fairly large number of 
digital cameras and is packaged in several of the major distributions.

I have only antidoctal evidence, and I haven't worked much at trying to get 
it to work right, but I have one of the cameras it claims to support and yet 
I can't seem to get it to import any photos from my camera. Just times out 
trying.
