it would be setup just like a normal LAN connection...  they use DHCP to
assign the address, but the modem is (in a residential install) assigned
only 1 IP address...  simplest thing is to just setup everything to use DHCP
(which is different from distro to distro)...  that should be all he
needs...  iirc, mail servers (POP3 and SMTP) are both mail.earthlink.net.
