It builds up an index of words in a set of files, then lets you query
the index. It works quite well -- at least the command line version.
There is also something called WebGlimpse, for indexing HTML files
and adding a search widget to your web pages. I didn't like the fact
that it changes the design of your web pages (adding the widget).

The license is NOT acceptable under OSD guidelines. It practices
price-discrimination: free for some people, expensive for others.
GNU has a free replacement for glimpse on its wish list, but I'm
not aware of anything being done about it.

Meanwhile, is ht//dig a viable replacement?
