I'm in the process of converting a P120 box into a masqerading gateway for my
other two pc's. Since I've never setup IP-masq, or diald, or ipchains, I
figured I might as well go all the way and introduce myself to Debian while I'm
feeling ambitious. Then I got the bright idea of upgrading to the 2.2.14
kernel before I try to set up the networking functions. So, after getting
Debian 2.1 installed and working, I went out and downloaded the 2.2.14 kernel
tarball. Unfortunately, I've been getting an error when I try to do 'make
zImage'. gcc churns away on the compile for at least 15 or 20 minutes, before
it dies with this message: (give or take a few typos)
make[1]: Entering directory 'usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot'
gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux/include -E -traditional -DSVGA_MODE=NORMAL_VG
bootsect.S -o bootsect.s
as86 -0 -a -o bootsect.o bootsect.s
make[1]: as86: Command not found
make[1]: *** [bootsect.o] Error 127
make[1]: Leaving directory '/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot'
make[1]: *** [zImage] Error 2
I did RTFM before I attempted the compile, and the only prerequisite that I
found was that I have a recent gcc. I am almost certain that my gcc version
2.7.2.3 is capable of handling the 2.2 kernels. Any ideas on what I'm missing
here?
thanks in advance,
Jeremy
