Please post the exact error messages ...

For lib-files, $LD_LIBRARY_PATH is the variable to use, but you
shouldn't need that.  If you used a binary distribution, try compiling
Freeciv from source instead, it is often a surprisingly easy
procedure.

I can't help you with that.  The support for package files for Freeciv
generally lags behind a little; one reason, I suppose, is that there are
so many Linux distributions and configurations to take into account.
