        This one got me as well. It took awhile to figure this out. 
After starting the server ("civserver -f gamefile"), you run
civclient with the -name option.  The name used is the name of
your player in the game, so if I started a game playing the Romans
with their standard leader name of 'Caesar', I would run
"civclient -name Caesar" to attach, then run "start" on the
server.
