I am not sure it is so. I have established three trade routes from 
three different cities to one AI city. Then I decided to check the AI 
trade bonus (in the observer mode). It was HUGE!!!, just because three 
top cities of mine have established the trade routes to this city. 
That's why I see no logic in the AI actions when it tries to kill my 
Caravans.

One solution to this problem is the unidirectional trade route (another 
solution was to diminish the effect of the trade routes when you are in 
the state of war). Then, of course, AI does not benefit from the fact 
that your Caravan arrives and can kill it safely.
