[Freeciv-Dev] How to debug server quits?

In some situations during a game, civserver seems to quit rather than throw
a core. civclient reports 'lost connection to server'.
How can I debug such situations?
Does compiling with debug flag help? Can I make civserver do extensive
logging without slowing down it too much (but still use the GUI to start
it)?
