Now I managed to compile ftwl client with James' directx patch, but it
crashes on start:

Server:
2: Connection request from <garbage> from localhost
2: c1 has client version <garbage>
2: Client rejected: c1 from localhost (connection incomplete).
2: <garbage> was rejected: Mismatched capabilities.

Client crashes promptly thereafter in what seems a crazy infinite loop, or
as follows:

2: ogg_add(-1,Auto-connecting to server "localhost" at port 5555 as "per")
2: id=-1 conn=00000000 player=none
0: requesting repaint
1: can't find glyph for 137 '<garbage>'
Assertion failed: 0, file text_renderer.c, line 184

Seems like a locale thing. LANG is unset, and freeciv compiled with
--disable-nls.
