On a typical Linux system, it should be put in /usr/share/applications
as-is. On other systems, I don't know.

I don't really know, but the format of this file should be compatible
with KDE 3.x too (because of Freedesktop.org standard). So it should
just be a matter of knowing where to put it. Anyway, I'm asking to put a
GTK2 client in a GNOME menu. I wouldn't really expect a GTK application
in my KDE's menus.

Another thing: maybe the path to the executable (the "Exec" directive in
the file) should be given by autoconf instead of being hardcoded? It is
just a matter of changing the "Exec" line to an autoconf macro and the
file to a .in file.
