This is a complete guess, but could this be a big endian versus little 
endian bug in the sending of information between the client and 
server?  I know that Sparc, Motorola, and PowerPC are big endian and 
that x86 is little endian.  It seems coincidental that you see this on 
Sparc and PowerPC, but not x86.
