The client uses menus elsewhere and most people do not consider it to be
a problem there. Why is it a problem here?

Either we use menus in the client, or we do not use menus in the client.
The GTK+ 2.0 client uses menus, according to HIG standards. I do not
consider the players dialog special in any way. Why do you consider it to
be special, if not for historical questions?
