Under this design I find the checked nation much too hard to find -
would it be possible, under either this design or the other, to use
color to highlight the selected nation?  At least turn the background
behind the selected flag white, black, or another shade of grey (and
choose something that will stand out to the colorblind too).  When the
only highlighting is a reverse-color bevel the flag becomes hard to
find.
