On FreeBSD, gtk-cnfig is called gtk12-config. Freeciv doesn't find it.
A patch to make Freeciv recognise this was applied to CVS in January
(see
http://arch.freeciv.org/freeciv-dev-200111/msg00080.html
) but Per's introduction of autogen.sh (which is great) seems to have
undone it.
The patch proposed here solves the problem, unless --with-gtk-prefix
or --with-gtk-exec-prefix are used. I don't have time to improve it
now, so I propose the attached patch is included into the release.
With it, Freeciv will compile from source on FreeBSD.
