Using your patch leads to the following result:

I am going to run ./configure with no arguments - if you wish
to pass any to it, please specify them on the ./autogen.sh command line.
+ creating acinclude.m4
+ running aclocal ...
aclocal: configure.in: 496: macro `AM_PATH_SDL' not found in library
aclocal failed - check that all needed development files are present on
system

BTW: I would like your file for autoconf-2.53...
