A pike need not involve metal at all. Lance or pike is just an extra-long 
polearm. Maybe require fire to fire-harden the tip. Its mainly a way of 
killing the knight's horse before his lance is in range. Unchivalric to go 
for the horse but so what, its not a game to the peasants, some of them 
actually get hurt.

What about the crossbow? The Pope banned it claiming it would be the end 
of civilisation due to its being able to penetrate the knight's armour. 
Although I thought the English (and probably Japanese too?) Longbow could 
already do that?
