The process seems to have choked on a huge diff file:

  -rw-r--r--   1 freeciv  freeciv  181393266 Feb 27 22:01 
cvsmaster-Feb-22-Feb-23.diff 

which then caused the script to get confused on subsequent days.
There is another huge diff (47M compressed) between Feb23 and 24.
It contains the lines:

  diff -H -u -r --new-file ../cvsmaster-Feb-23/CVS/CVSROOT/commitlog 
./CVS/CVSROOT
--- ../cvsmaster-Feb-23/CVS/CVSROOT/commitlog   Wed Dec 31 16:00:00 1969

In other words, the entire commit log was present in both diffs.
