Ok, I took a look at gnuplot.  Its less complicated than I thought,
but then, so are most things when you open the black box...

But, in addition I would add, that I don't really know much about what
I am doing ;)

I made the changes, then ran autoconf, automake, autoheader.

So there is a lot of cruft in this patch that should be weeded out...
But I couldn't remember the policy on autogenerated files. I know they
should be included, but thats all I remember.

(obviously I have two tar(1)s on my system, the crappy sun one and gtar,
please ignore that too :)
