I've investigated this further, and it turns out that it's not
meaningless.  A space will affect the way that floating point numbers
are output.  Since it only makes sense when you're trying to print a
floating point numer, I'll see if I can get him to make it so that
gettext is smart enough to understand that 'm' (in this case) does not
specify a floating-point number.
