If you do

/metainfo this is an extremely ridiculously long-winded and verbose
information string please excuse me for not being concise

and then look at

http://www.freeciv.org/metaserver

you will find the message has gone all over the place:

you'll see the port number in the server column;
your metainfo msg all garbled in the number of players column

etc.

I think this is what you call a buffer overrun problem which can be
fixed by checking your buffer bounds.
