Sorry, turns out it was a problem with my system.  (Started to
suspect this when the example readline progs which came with my 
libreadline failed the same way.)  In the course of upgrading
some packages I realized I had an inappropriate ncurses-dev 
package installed, somehow mucking things up.  The patch works 
ok for me now!
