play with timeout.

use gtk+ client

use fvwm2 window manager or i am not sure what it was
perhaps icewm or afterstep, but i know that someone else could
reproduce the problem with something NOT fvwm2, so it is not a problem
with fvwm2.

short before the timeout occurs, move with the mouse around
in the top menu bar. without releasing the button.

now when the timeout occurs, your mousecursor will stay the arrow
it has to be in menus, you can move it around, but the civclient
does in no way react to the things you do. and even worse you cannot
use any other X program anymore and keyboard is locked too.

now switch to a linux console (tty1), login and do a killall civclient
to be able to use X again :)
