I have had a similar problem compiling on my redhat 6.1 . While using
--disable-nls helped, it is a crude solution.
I found that compiling as root I did not encounter the problem, so it must be
some system-variable set only as root that is causing it. Maybe someone more at
home wth the dark corners of makefiles can track down the problem and make a
solution in the makefiles.
