This looks like your DISPLAY environment variable is not set.

Make sure you're in X, and that the DISPLAY variable is set appropriately
(e.g., on the local console, it should be ":0" for most cases).

You can check with "echo $DISPLAY".

You can set it with "DISPLAY=:0; export DISPLAY" (assuming that :0 is the
right setting for your X server).
