That was apparently it.  I had been getting those messages (described in
the link) in the xterm that I started the client from, so I watched it
and saw that they were occuring during the pause I reported.

The upgrade to GTK 1.2.3 "fixed" this problem, but at the cost of
breaking my theme engine (incompatabiliies with libpixmap).  I'll either
find a compatible libpixmap or decide which break I want to live with...
