This is almost certainly a TCP/IP configuration problem.  Whatever address
appears in the client's connection box -- can you ping it?

To what address are you trying to connect?  What do you have
in /etc/hosts, /etc/resolv.conf and (if this is Red Hat 5.x)
/etc/nsswitch.conf?  What's the output of "ifconfig" and "netstat -rn"
look like?  If you have an Internet PPP connection configured on the
system, is it started at the time when you try this, or stopped?
