I sort of have this same problem.  I'm using the X libs from
XFree86-rhcn-3.3.3.1, and everything I compile that uses X won't work on the
normal XFree86-3.3.2.3 or earlier X libs.  You could get the X rpms from rhcn
and then it will work, and you get truetype font support.
