This is usually caused by one of three things:

1) You have old and/or missing data files. Try "make install" again.
2) You have no valid DISPLAY variable set. Try "export DISPLAY=:0.0".
3) You have compiled with Xaw3d without using the --with-xaw3d option.
   Try doing "configure --with-xaw3d" on the sources and make it again.
