An alternative approach could be to implement multiple co-operative
connections per player.  Then you could connect an AI-client and 
configure it to manage some things, and also connect with a normal
client and have a human player manage the rest.
This would be a less integrated approach, but it would have the
advantage of keeping the client relatively lightweight, and maybe
working with the various clients (Xaw/Gtk/Java).
