While obviously correct, this alone was not enough to make gross ferry
problems, fixed in CVS, go away in S1_14. Probably the improved behaviour
witnessed by the similar fix in CVS was dependent on some other cleanup or
fix.

I'll try to backport some more stuff to see if I can improve the
situation.
