I told Tom Wallis I'd send him this info, then thought that there might be
other people who might want to experiment.
I ran across a user on LockerGnome that has taken the TCP/IP stack
completely off of their 'regular' Windows XP machine, after installing
VMWare server. Then, they built a virtual XP machine with a non-persistent
disk and bridged it's network to the host machine's network card. This way,
they are able to run XP (or any other OS that I've run across, for that
matter) in a fairly protected environment, while still having an Internet
facing machine with Internet Exploder so they can look at all those
non-standards-compliant web sites and still have them be purdy.

VMWare currently offers their Server software, and matching client software,
as an open source product. They do sell certain enhanced versions of their
software, as well as systems to manage enterprise-wide topologies of
virtualized systems, but, for the time being, at least, their base product
is a freebie. I personally use it to host a Windows XP session on my FC6
(yeah, I know, I need to update) Myth system, for that stuff that just
doesn't want to work under Wine. You DO have to get a serial number to
actually configure/install the server, but that's just a registration kinda
thing. You also need to have the kernel source for your distro loaded, as
the VMWare server needs to compile a network module against the kernel to
build it's little network thingy widget that bridges the virtual machine's
network to the hosting environment.

Anyway, here are the web sites I promised Tom:
VMWare main site: vmware.com
Server download: vmware.com/download/server/
Serial numbers: register.vmware.com/content/registration.html
