Very odd, but on second go-round it worked like a charm! It sets up a "live" 
version a la Knoppix and then gives you the option of install, which it did 
just fine. Graphics looks great; defaults to my 1280x800 just fine with great 
anti-aliasing. Unfortunately, I didn't read the fine print ahead of time and 
now have some stripped down version of Linux.

I think previous version of ubuntu included a "safe graphics mode" for the
livecd. any luck with that?
