You could try switching to a terminal (CTRL+ALT+1) and find the log in
/var/log
I think previous version of ubuntu included a "safe graphics mode" for the
livecd. any luck with that?

also, have you searched the forums? ubuntu is well-known for having a great
community: http://www.ubuntuforums.org
